13288 Kirellii Starshiptraders (SST) Graphical Client games -1 Re: This game has more than text! I am glad you looked. For version 2 you can use the F10 key for 600*480, F11 key for 800*600 and the F12 key for 1024*768 resolutions. You can also manually resize (top middle of screen). The Client is the front end client piece for a free online game. The database server is another piece of software which is distributed by Ray Yeargin. I am not current on his release terms and such.

Ray has given me the authority to guide client development to take the game he has from a text (telnet) and web browser (mozilla? :) format and make it a graphical game.

What I did is take a template of suggestions from him and add my own artistic look by taking my AI game bot parts that were not so controversial. Since around 1995, I have been creating AI players or assistants to help me play. So I figured I would throw some of my NPC player in the form of the Kirellii Tactician and Kirellii Reporter into the game. My bot started off as Toi Dee and I hoped to put Azile into it with a database of the Manual and such. It has always been hoped that this modified bot player could assist newbies by answering questions as well as in playing. Granted, since this is a player versus player game, such assistance is not always tender. Katrina Kirellii is the result. The Kirellii DOWs (Dogs of War) are her helpers. FYI - the Emotion Engine which determines the playing style and mood through a Cognitive approach is NOT in the released version. So the client only assists a player who uses it, however you can turn weapons over to the Tactician and it will attack and such when the opportunity arises. This is not *recommended* in the long run, but it will educate you quickly. Most of the Azile Manual assistance is included in the pop ups - so this releaves the need for online chat feedback. If you can understand that the artificial intelligence/avatar is Katrina Kirellii and that her bare bones are now the client, then you are way ahead of everyone. That is also why the binary/executable is called kirellii. The current Alpha version is called "Kirellii Alpha Test" or KAT for short and can be found at the Yahoo Group "starshiptraders".

The Manual and downloads are found at www.geocities.com/kirellii and are available also with the online store. The Developer's Chat is located at the Yahoo Group "starshiptraders". The telnet and web browser interface can be found at www.starshiptraders.com. In the Yahoo Group is a readme file in the files section. I am still working on the Linux release part and am hoping to get a Mac OS X version out too. Currently I run Windows XP/ Red Hat 9 dually and I keep wiping out my RH installation through fiddling. So, as a result, the Linux release is not as clever or easy to install. I do plan on adding the Manual and such to the tar/gunzip file, but have not decided on exactly which to add. As a result, I hope that the Online Manual will suffice for now. Since in Windows, bloatware is not a problem, I have included every piece of propaganda and junk I can that helps out. So the Linux download is about 60K and the Windows download is about 1.2MB.

To sign in, you just put a username in at the prompt and you will be told if it is unique. You will also have to create a password. Once the client is up, you have a LOT of pop up help to assist you. Or, you could read the C source. I would just play the game and leave the popups to me. To disable the popups, you would hit the F4 key to toggle them on and off.

Thanks for the comments, I will try to address your concerns this month in more detail and Release version 3, which is fully graphically accelerated with the additions. No Promises as I only do this as a hobby.

David Johnson
aka Katrina Kirellii 2003-08-19 18:17:45 13256

13290 ScummVM games 4512 I'm a happy chappie Though I fancied getting a copy of Day of the Tentacle or Sam & Max for quite a long time, I don't think they're available even on budget nowadays. So this program was only of vague interest to me. Then I had a closer look, and realised that "some CD my mum picked up at a jumble sale ages ago", The Dig, was actually one of the (many) games supported by this! I'd never even tried the thing, as she'd bought it after I'd stopped using Windows.
So I've now spent the past few days playing this till I beat it. Time I could have spent doing other stuff, but hey, no worries. Several times, I felt as though ScummVM had screwed up somehow and left the game in a state where I couldn't progress. Each time, it turned out I just wasn't being imaginitive enough to solve the puzzles. There were little glitches in the game, but not too often, and they weren't too serious. Now I find myself wanting more specs on the SCUMM formats (yeah, I saw there were some on the ScummVM site), and wondering which SCUMM version would be best to target for making custom games to work with this...
I have nothing more to say than big thumbs up (and hope you appreciate I don't give 5 stars often) 2003-08-19 22:04:05 0

13293 Simutrans games -1 Re: why exactly... Well, that's an obvious answer, but not a helpfull one. I don't see a reason for not releasing the source code. The author does not loose control of a project just because the source-code is open. But it would enable other who have non-i386-machines to compile it for their architecture (provided there is no (or not too much) system-dependent code. I will not be able to play the game on the machine I am using right now. 2003-08-20 02:39:14 12440
