| 13225 | Kirellii Starshiptraders (SST) Graphical Client | games | -1 | This game has more than text! | I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents since the page with only text was shown. The screen shown is the radio/chat screen. The game has more graphics than that - however - it is still a strategy game first and a graphics game second. Once again - to download the stable production version go to: www.geocities.com/kirellii or go to the Yahoo Group "starshiptraders" for the latest Development News and Test Clients if you like to walk on the *wild side*. - David Johnson aka "Kat" | 2003-08-14 19:16:04 | 0 |

| 13230 | 3947 | news | -1 | Re: I wouldn't get too excited |
Yes, he WAS CEO of Xiph.org, the organization that in only one year, just as promised, developed Ogg Theora into a viable, recognized, documented, and widely available Legally Free video codec and file format....

Oh, wait, what HAVE I been smoking? Ogg Theora has barely gotten a second Alpha release out (about the time that Xiph had been claiming the final release would be ready, a full year after the initial announcement that the project would start...). None of the developers seem to have time to ever work on it, what development DOES take place seems to happen in 'secret' (to appear mysteriously in CVS at some point), and it is almost impossible to get any news about the project.

I can't blame the developers too much, after all, they're volunteers. Emmett's job (while he was there) SHOULD have been to at least oversee a bit of promotion and regular news about the project, and PREFERABLY to try to engage 'outsiders' so there'd be more development resources. (The FAQ implies that they want other developers to join in, but the silence and apparent lack of participation/disinterest at xiph, plus the later STRONG admonitions in the FAQ not to try using Ogg Theora for anything until they mysteriously get a Beta version out because the format will change pretty much preclude any 'outsiders' from stepping in to do much meaningful development).

(Don't mind me - What I see of the Ogg Theora project at this point STILL looks very promising - about a YEAR after the first alpha release with only one other code update - and it irks the heck out of me to see it languish due to lack of news and attention...)

I find it telling that what little progress has been made on Ogg Theora since the September 2002 Alpha 1 release seems to have only appeared AFTER Emmett Plant left...
| 2003-08-15 10:01:35 | 13224 |
| 13231 | 3947 | news | -1 | Re: I wouldn't get too excited | Since this is a gaming site, let's not forget the fiasco that was Time City. It was hugely funded and promoted. It was gonna put Linux gaming on the map. It was gonna be the Best. Game. Ever. It was gonna give you oral sex. It would make Windows users drool with envy. Emmett got Time City booths at Linux expos and wrote articles about his project management skills and probably profited personally from it all.
Of course, the rest is history. Time City was delivered ahead of schedule and exceeded all of the hype that came before it. Most of us are still playing this amazing, ground-breaking game again and again for the sheer joy of it. Time City really is the Best. Game. Ever.
Oh, sorry, there was an error in that last paragraph. What I meant to say was that the Time City project never released a line of code and quietly faded away. | 2003-08-15 10:36:30 | 13230 |

| 13234 | 3947 | news | -1 | Re: I wouldn't get too excited | good trolling :) Xiph rocks, and so does Emmet. ... and thanks to all the other Ogg developers for their high-quality, patent-free audio/video codec implementations. | 2003-08-15 15:30:01 | 13230 |
