13109 Slickworm games -1 Yeah it's slick by far. To compile it one may need: CC="g++" before ./configure It's terrific fun. I enjoyed blowing huge potholes and washes in road and driving the buggy over them. So far it sort of has a tribes2 feel/similarity to it. I wait in breathless anticipation of the next awesome release of slickworm. 2003-08-08 16:11:26 0

13112 Porrog games 4512 Re: Quite good Ratings- Between us, Defiance & I seem to have (accidentally) confused happypenguin.org (see comments further below). Maybe if I give myself a rating again, it'll work itself out, to some extent. (Crosses fingers).
Text vs graphics: I'm afraid I'm a bit of a stick-in-the-mud on this. To me, a roguelike doesn't have graphics. If other people want to have the option to use graphical tiles in their roguelikes, that's their business. But I don't expect to add such an option to Porrog.
Apart from the "well, thats the traditional way of it" argument, IMO there's the problem (independent of the actual quality of the tiles, which is often low) that when a roguelike game uses tiles, they can actually make it look worse. It's just not normal in a game for everything to be totally aligned into a grid, and it looks very primitive. Curses based roguelikes look primitive too, of course... but they don't try to pretend otherwise! How could they hide it?
Hope that made some sort of sense (that wasn't a rant, BTW- when it's my own game, I don't have to fret about making my point, as the choice is being taken by myself anyway...).
Porrog isn't likely to be my only game, but unless I make a second roguelike, it's probably going to be the only text based game I make- anything else I do is likely to use SDL or OpenGL. 2003-08-08 16:37:05 13096
13113 Porrog games 7281 Re: Quite good
Agreed, we pretty much fscked the ratings to the sky. I'm liking the purty colors, though, always nice to have my ass handed to me by a blue giant hamster (Note: I'm aware that some perverts will rearrange that statement to make something dirty in their minds to satisfy their sick desires, and I encourage it wholeheartedly).

I'm borderline on the whole graphics thing, though. Look at what Falcon's Eye does for Nethack. I *love* the game either way, but my first play-through of Falcon's Eye was like having some of my less-interesting dreams come true. It really revitalized the whole game for me. Either way, unless someone decides to code tileset support themselves, I'm not exactly expecting it.
2003-08-08 19:06:07 13112
13114 Slickworm games -1 Compile fails It's pretty long so didn't want to spam, here. 2003-08-08 19:11:03 0
13115 Slickworm games -1 Awesomeness I haven't had this much fun rearranging terrain since Red Faction! The handling on the buggy is rather finicky, and you seem to slide down hills too easily, but other than that it's great fun, and the future releases should be really interesting to see! 2003-08-08 20:51:07 0
13116 Freedroid RPG games 5085 Re: Pretty Good more than likely an image wasn't checked in before the release (this happens alot from what i've seen) and it should have just above that error message the name of the missing image, send johannes (sp?) an email or send it to the mailing list and they'll fix it right up usually 2003-08-08 22:44:07 13097
