Besides the clinet server mechanism could have been a bit more automatic... | 2003-07-27 02:10:16 | 0 |

| 12826 | GtkAtlantic | games | -1 | GTK2 version?? | Hey mister, where's the GTK2 version? It's 2003 for cripes sake!! :-) sri | 2003-07-27 12:26:56 | 0 |
| 12827 | GtkAtlantic | games | -1 | Re: GTK2 version?? | I thought I would reply out of honesty. I am not the author of this software, and am just replying to your text. I started programming with GTK1 and it works well enough to continue using it. GTK1 isn't bad, and I am perfectly ignorant of what GTK2 supposedly improved or re-organized beyond the abilities of GTK1. As so, if GTK1 dynamic libraries are no longer provided by the system's operating environment, more static Linux binaries will be seen; in order to continue taking use of GTK1 upon a system that is without GTK1 dynamic libraries. It is common for the earlier API (in this instance, GTK1) to offer a more simple and smaller system resource rating than its later (in this instance, GTK2) which may offer a more complex API that uses more system resources. With a simple API, software doesn't require higher-performance computing, respecting the limited resources of the microcomputers or PDAs and allowing maximum market or end-user penetration of the application.
Still, I understand your desire when the GTK1 applications don't match the visual and behavior of a GTK2 application. I've been a direct Xlib programmer for a long time, and I too catch myself groking the excessive code to make a simple X11 Pane have attractive visuals and bloated widgets, lest such features only limit systems with such support to use such software and I avoid such respectivly. When I encounter an application that uses the unnecessary visuals of a library I do not use, I grok the code and mute and transmute the unsupported library calls and headers and C++ syntax all to a more supported C syntax using generic system libraries; in order for even the most simple (efficient) system libraries to have use of the application. I don't expect anyone to understand, such is my confession. | 2003-07-27 12:48:16 | 12826 |
| 12828 | GtkAtlantic | games | -1 | Re: GTK2 version?? | The GTK2 has other improvements like accessability which allows people with disability to actually interact with software. Something we don't have here. Secondly, we have other things like antialiased text, hopefully an improved file dialog box. I do not believe that GTK2 takes anymore resources than GTK1. But visually, GTK2 is quite stunning. sri | 2003-07-27 12:52:48 | 12827 |
| 12829 | Construo | games | 4512 | Pretty cool | I should have tried this ages ago, it's quite fun. Unfortunately, tho:
The compilation finished OK, but when trying to run construo.glut, it said
"./construo.glut: relocation error: /usr/X11R6/lib/libglut.so.3: undefined symbol: XmuLookupStandardColormap"
Which I take to mean that my version of libglut needs to be linked to libXmu... so much for autoconf!
So I had to use the X11 version instead, which worked fine but seemed maybe a little slow. Perhaps that's down to the processing rather than the display tho.
Also, found that sometimes, when trying to connect to existing points, it can sometimes be hard to select them, meaning you end up creating a new one instead. I'd like to see some of the features described in the TODO list, too.
In the meantime, nice one Grumbel! | 2003-07-27 14:57:05 | 0 |
