| 12389 | Generator | games | -1 | Re: Nice emu | A port of Gens would blow this away. I hear it's under development - it's already been ported to BeOS with Allegro, so hopefully it won't be long. I mean, not to knock Generator's devs, they've made a great emu, but Gens is nearly flawless, it can run even tough games like Gargoyles, it does SegaCD and 32x.... *pins and needles* | 2003-07-01 12:13:28 | 12385 |
| 12390 | Virtual Jaguar | games | -1 | Does it run Tempest 2000 well? | Great to see an emulator for one of my old favorite consoles! :)
The question: Does anybody know how well this emulator runs Tempest 2000? I really loved that game and would really enjoy to play it again.
/Tordj | 2003-07-01 12:18:26 | 0 |
| 12391 | FreeCraft | games | 6494 | ATTN, nasty troll | >It's still up your sour ass and you're on your "blame OSS/GPL" pogo stick trying to force it out.

Thanks for that. At least I know what kind of person I am replying to.

As for the part about flames and off-topics: ??!!!?!?!!? This was my overall 5th or 6th post on happypenguin.org. Of these 5 or 6 posts, about three consider Freecraft and the rest is (as far as I remember) about Construo and Nil. The other two posts have nothing to do with flaming or off-topic. Except if you think that asking whether distribution of the Freecraft source code is illegal, is "off-topic".

?!!!?!?!!!?

Oh yeah... and I _never_ blamed GPL or anything. It's just that I see that many people advocate mindlessly as if Open Source is a religion or something. It's just a license. | 2003-07-01 12:40:17 | 12351 |

| 12394 | Tux-n-Run | games | 506 | Promising | Pretty smooth animations, even so currently a bit undetailed (Tux should use his arms a bit more), nice snow and beside that good gfx, well, promising gfx, because there isn't currently much more than Tux and a redhat. After all it looks pretty promising, not more 'cause there currently is not much to play.
But hell, please remove all these stupid references zu Microsoft, Redhat or other Linux stuff, I am simply pretty tired of these things and they have no place in a jump'n run. If you really want them there, please don't make them so obvious, a 'walking' window simply looks pretty stupid and Tux with a Redhat doesn't look all that good either. Replace them with something more original, something that doesn't look like the total lack of creativity. Sorry if this may sound a bit harsh, but I really hate all this 'Microsoft Sucks' stuff, since its pretty much contra productive. If you want to show how cool Linux is, then show me how cool it is by showing me Linux stuff, not by bashing Microsoft. Be constructive, not destructive. | 2003-07-01 17:25:53 | 0 |
| 12395 | FreeCraft | games | -1 | Re: Talks,only talks... | That's exactly the same reply I got from them!
And I was stupid enough to think they'd take the time to write to me... yeah, right, it's a bulk response to everyone who e-mailed them talking abour freecraft!...

By the way, the e-mail I received from them also had that strange looking code:
{info0mi888gn}
Maybe it's their way of collecting all our e-mails into one single place, so if you reply to them, don't keep this code anywhere in the message.

Here's the response they got from me:

Well, first of all, thank you for answering! Seriously, I was not expecting you'd go to the work of replying to my e-mail. I appreciate that.

But you still don't get the picture about this whole thing.
I know Blizzard protects it's IP and all that. And you should. I'm not telling you not to.
But for crying out loud, go chase someone who's making a game and is calling it "WarCraft 4: The Return", not a hobby project called "FreeCraft"!

Come on guys, think! I know the person who decided to bash FreeCraft is probably not a game developer but a "marketing grunt" (no offense meant) and so he's not so close to what it is like to love a game so much that you want to create one by yourself.
But think about it: the FreeCraft poeple are the kind of guys that bought every single game you made ever since WarCraft came out! Those are your true and biggest fans! They are such big fans that they decided to make a game engine that could play similar games to yours!
They wanted so much to be like you, to be able to achieve what you achieved, that they even changed their project name to something that reminded them of your great games!
Was this really going to hurt you?
Well, there's two possible answers, here:

1 - Yes, it was hurting or going to hurt Blizzard. In this case, I take it that Blizzard has put someone responsible and smart investigating the FreeCraft project and this person found the project was so good that it could be picked up by some rival company and create an awsome game that would dethrone your *Craft games. My friends, let's not get carried away to Azeroth. This is the real world and in the real world, an amateur project such as freecraft could never dethrone something as huge as your *Craft games...

2 - No, it wasn't hurting or going to hurt Blizzard. This is what I belive to be true. Such a small hobby project could not harm Blizzard in any way.
And PLEASE, don't tell me someone could see their name and think "hey, is this that game where you fight orcs and zombies?"...
Even so, what would happen then? That person wouldn't buy your product? You'd lose one customer? Ten? A THOUSAND? WarCraft 3 sold MILLIONS of copies wroldwide!! Why can't you be satisfied with that??

Also, why do you say freecraft is a "derivative work containing elements of Blizzard Entertainment games"? I consider it to be as much derivative work from Blizzard's games as WarCraft is derivative work from Westwood's "Dune 2"...
If you refer to the possibilit of people using WarCraft 2 graphics, well I don't know enough about laws to be able to say if they were indeed breaking any. But fortunately I do have one thing that everyone should have but Blizzard doesn't seem to: good sense.
What I mean is that you *know* this option in the FreeCraft engine does not harm Blizzard at all. At the very best, it helps you because more people would buy WarCraft 2 - and don't talk about the piracy argument, either. I know that there would be people who would illegaly copy WarCraft 2 CD's in order to use them with FreeCraft. But hey, in that case, don't put any of your games on sale, because someone will also make illegal copies of it!
Remember that for every person that copies a game CD, there's another that legally purchases the game. Just because one person decides to copy the game, doesn't mean that no one will buy it.

Still, you forced the project to shut down...

Why?

So basically it all boils down to two things: honesty and good sense.
And this time, Blizzard failed miserably to demonstrate these two qualities, which I used to think were present in the company that brought to life the fabulous games it did.

You could come up with all the burocratic and legal reasons you want.
You could even take this case to court - you could probably win it ten thousand times.
Still you wouldn't have any moral reason to do what you did.

So I'm sorry guys, but this is something I will never forget or forgive.
And neither will the thousands of people who agree with me.
This is the kind of scheme I would expect from Microsoft, not my favorite game development team...

Sincerely,

Raul Santos | 2003-07-01 17:38:51 | 12383 |

| 12397 | armagetron | games | 7914 | yah! | I remember playing this game in windows and about a year back thinking "If this game was built for linux, imagine how many other cool little free games I can get".
