Description: A free, enhanced clone of Microprose's Civilization game.

A prerelease version of Freeciv 1.8.0 is available at the Freeciv ftp site. The developers hope to release the final 1.8.0 version next week if all goes well. The GTK+ client port isn't yet rolled into the package, but I'm told we can expect it in the 1.8.1 release.

Description: A free, portable 3D engine with a ton of features.

A new "official" beta release of Crystal Space, the LGPL multiplatform 3D engine, was released this morning. The authors say this release should be more stable than previous releases, the documentation has been updated, and compilation has been simplified. Precompiled binaries for various platforms are available too. If you haven't checked this impressive engine out yet, now's a good time to get your feet wet. |

Description: A 3rd person, side-view, fast-action, kill-them-before-they-kill-you game.

XEvil 2.0 and 2.01 are fully network compatible. XEvil 2.0 clients can
connect to 2.01 servers and vice versa.
What's new since 2.0:

*** Fixed the annoying DNS lookup bug. *** XEvil will now properly
accept XEvil server addresses in the dotted IP
notation. Will not perform an unnecessary DNS lookup.

Can specify player name from the Windows "run server" dialog.
Previously had to use the -name command line option.

Server tells clients when a new level is starting before making them
hang for a few seconds waiting for the level to load.

Fixed the "Flying Powers" bug, where sometimes you can't fly properly
when you get Flying Powers from the Altar of Sin.

Fixed the dog getting stuck on edge of floor bug.

Can use ESC to abort chat messages on Windows.

No more "You Gain 5 Kills" from the AltarOfSin. Everybody hated it.

Minor UI tweaks Windows, UNIX, and Windows Dedicated Server.

Zarch is influenced by the classic Acorn Archimedes game. This game was also known as "Virus" on the Commodore Amiga.

In Zarch, you fly around a randomly created world, that includes water, trees, houses, fuel platforms and some sophisticated enemy fighters.

All the original Virus gameplay has not been implemented yet, but right now there are 10 progressively harder levels to play with progressively more difficult enemies. After 10 levels the game ends. |

There's a really nice, in-depth look at Quake 3 Arena for Linux over at sCary's Shuga Shack, in which Carmack and Zoid reveal some of id's plans for Linux. Apparently Quake 3 for Linux will be available as a shrinkwrapped product separate from the Windows version, which I find very very cool. Zoid also talks about Quake 1 & 2 game + mission packs boxed sets for Linux in the near future.
Additionally, the article has a good deal of information about OpenGL support under Linux and how Zoid's dealing with it a bit differently for Q3 than with the previous Quake ports.

In other Q3 news, there are some more pants-tightening Quake 3 screenshots over at Quake3Arena.com that you must check out. |
