Before you criticise it, I'm quite satisfied with my graphics card, even if it isn't state of the art. It was good enough when I got it, and I feel no need to upgrade EVERY piece of hardware I have every year just to play certain slow games. I'd rather spend money on a new processor (that at least doesn't need proprietary drivers). | 2003-06-25 13:35:21 | 11605 |

| 12301 | Pachi el marciano | games | 7388 | very nice game | I have just finished Pachi el Marciano demo and I must say I can't wait to see the rest of the game. The game is very nice and in my opinion it catches perfectly well the gameplay characteristics of old-school platform games like Manic Miner and others (which is exactly the kind of games that took most of my time back in the eighties when I was young:-). I also like the graphics and the sound effects. A few remarks/questions:

On the hard level monsters kill you long before you meet them. It is IMO a wrong idea -- sure, it makes the game harder, but it's very irritating. Just as well you could make the game harder by randomly killing the character from time to time.
When the program can't read file, it should give better diagnosis than "can't read from file", esp. since such error (followed by Segmentation Fault) is very probable, if the root user has wrong umask when installing the data files. Something like perror(str); after fprintf(stderr, "can't read from file \n"); could be very helpful.
The pouring effect after Pachi dies really does take too much time and is irritating. Remember the way it was in Jest Set Willy? Very short Ka-boom and you continue playing.
Do you plan to provide tools like level editor and/or some description of data formats used? That would be really neat.
Has the comic book with Pachi el Marciano been published in some language other than Spanish? (perhaps English or French?)
Thanks once again for the game, I'm looking forward to see more levels. | 2003-06-25 14:21:08 | 0 |

| 12303 | 3815 | news | -1 | Transit Exec may look like RT or TT | Transit Exec may look like Railroad Tycoon or Transport Tycoon at first glance, but take a look at the techtree at http://transitexec.sourceforge.net/techtree.shtml Seems to me that they're attempting something different. Something I've certainly never seen before. From that basic plan it looks like it's going to have multiple transit systems like Transport tycoon and have a Civilization-style timeline all the way from ancient history to the future. Sure seems interesting and *very* original to me. This is one of the most innovative games I've seen in a while. I really hope the project will actually be realized. If it will, we'll surely have another free software jewel of a game. | 2003-06-25 14:56:55 | 12275 |

| 12305 | 3815 | news | 4512 | FcMP | It's ironic what I keep hearing you saying about Freecraft and FcMP having their progress go cold. A year ago now, I was seeing various graphics missing (for things like heal spell and flame shield, etc), and tried doing versions for them. I just about finished them after a little while, but had a bit more to do, and then ended up doing something else. I forget just what distracted my attention, but time slipped by... Then a couple of months later, I had a glance at the project, and Lo! it seemed that someone else had done versions of the graphics I'd done in the meantime. Perhaps if I'd submitted my graphics earlier, whoever did the other versions might have spent time doing some other graphics instead, making progress even better, but there was still progress.
What I'm trying to say is, I find it hard to believe things had got quite bad enough for them to just give up. But it is starting to sound like maybe they could have placated Blizzard with just a name change...
If you're talking about inconsistency in graphics, then yes, I think you have a point there. The leaders of projects like these really ought to make guidelines for what sort of submissions they want. | 2003-06-25 17:29:51 | 12269 |
| 12306 | Arkhart | games | -1 | Re: Oh. | Get an ATI card.. I got a Radeon 9100 for about 100 bucks, and it works peachy in both linux and windows. Currently a bit crash prone in NwN:SoU under heavy particle effects, but it's got open source drivers and is pretty fast, and not too expensive. -- vranash | 2003-06-25 17:42:39 | 12299 |

| 12308 | 3816 | news | 6327 | Re: 3816 | They did try. I just don't want to give this a pass and let it set the standard for Linux releases. Think there is any chance they would allow you to sell CDs with the installer and movies? They own that to their testers if nothing else. Frankly, it wouldn't be unfair to let you sell it since you'd be covering up a gaping hole in their software.
Edd | 2003-06-25 19:53:56 | 12261 |
