12289 FreeCraft games 6494 Re: Who's fault could it be?....Hmmm... Sorry, but you're making the same mistake most people make. They were _not_ using "ripped graphics". They had the binary or source downloadable separately from a zip file dubbed "FreeCraft Media Project" (FCMP), which featured War2-like graphics. They were far from being perfect, but they didn't hurt your eyes either. If you had an original war2 cdrom, then you could use an (also quite imperfect) "installer" (a batch file or script), which would copy all the necessary files from the cd to the hard disk.

Unfortunately whoever put up the screenshot on happypenguin.org decided to take one impressive screenshot with these graphics installed, which for most people means "look people, someone made warcraft II again and is distributing the proprietary game art on the net".

Well, if you play with fire, you will get burnt (eventually). 2003-06-25 10:34:25 12284
12290 NetHack Falcon's Eye games -1 Re: NetHack Falcon's Eye That's what I love about Linux and opensource software...no matter what, it'll work on computers of the yesteryears. My last computer was a dual Pentium Pro 200MHz system with a Voodoo3. I loved that system, but had to part it to afford an Alpha computer for some programming experience on a true 64bit platform. Keep in mind, your Pentium Pro 200MHz computer performs better than a Pentium2 at 300MHz! The only viable upgrade would be a Pentium Pro overdrive CPU to bring it at 333MHz, which in turn yields more performance than a Pentium2 at 400MHz! Yes, Pentium2 and Pentium Pro are completly different; I researched the reasons and specs, and discovered the Pentium Pro's cache operates at the core of the CPU (200MHz), while the Pentium2's cache operates at the crummy bus speed (66MHz).
I must say, if you want excellent performance and are zealous of opensource software and cross-platform computing, by all means purchase an Alpha from an eBay or Yahoo auction! Get one of the 164LX or 164UX (21164, 21164a, 21164b, ev56) or Miata; they are sweet, based mostly on SCSI subsystems, and just need to have maximum RAM and a Radeon 9000 installed. Don't go with nVidia (no opensource drivers), go with Radeon or at least a PCI Matrox G200 or G450 and Radeon...or 3Dlabs GVX1 will work nice on it. I'll never forget my Dual Pentium Pro dream machine...SCSI...512MB 50ns EDO ECC DRAM...Voodoo3...SoundBlaster 128...SCSI...SCSI...SCSI... 2003-06-25 10:36:36 11983
12291 FreeCraft games 6494 And yes... ... I am rating it with 5 stars, because it is/was by far the most playable game under linux, far ahead of FreeCiv, which after trying out, I found out to be just a Civilization _I_ clone with isometric tiles and one very, very, very sucky gtk interface...

I have done quite a fair bit of multiplayer "beta testing" :-) of Freecraft and the game played not only very well, but it proved to be an immense overhaul of War2, adding elements that should have been in war2 in the first place (unit queuing for one).

It was fun while it lasted, and a good thing that the last version had save/load capabilities, as buggy as they might be. 2003-06-25 10:44:50 0

12293 3815 news -1 Re: "*****craft-like?" ...be carefull!! In the commercial world, what you call "cloning" is more accurately following a genre. Warcraft wasn't just a Dune 2 clone, it was a major improvement with a totally different setting. It had its weaknesses, but it wasn't a simple duplicate.
"FreeCraft" was openly trying to exactly recreate Warcraft 2. It was an exercise in copyright evasion, and a complete waste of resources that could have been spent on making something original.
I don't care how flimsy Blizzard's legal justification was. Any excuse is a good one to shut down this pointless project and point its developers in a more productive direction.
Who knows? Robovasion might be cooler than Warcraft 2, or even Starcraft. 2003-06-25 11:19:43 12279
12294 Soccar games 7778 Re: Looks very promising Thats on my TODO list but I decided to go first with a single executable because I thought it's more fun to play on LAN. Also for a real internet game we'd need chat which is a bit problematic now because OGRE overlay scripts seem to have problems (honestly, this is why I have a 3D scoreboard instead of a HUD). Anyway it would be relatively easy to implement, I'd just compile some basic math code (Math, Matrix3, Vector3, Quaternion classes) in the dedicated server. 2003-06-25 11:45:38 12288

12296 UFO2000 games -1 Segmentation fault Hi. I got everything to compile okay, but the game still won't run. I get a: [darklord@darkforce ufo2000]$ ./ufo2000 Shutting down Allegro due to signal #11 Segmentation fault Any ideas why? Thanks. 2003-06-25 12:14:57 0
12297 Pingus games -1 Pingus Just like Lemmings in every way and I like it. I think the only thing that I don't like about this game is those penguins move too fast; I have to constantly pause my game when I'm about to make jumpers clear two gaps and I can't let the penguins plummet to thier doom when concentrate on one gap. 2003-06-25 12:42:45 0
12298 3815 news 506 Re: "*****craft-like?" ...be carefull!! Freecraft wasn't a waste of resources, it was more the lack them. If there are no artist creating original content, reusing the originial gfx is the way that wastes the least resources, since it doesn't require any artist resources at all. Sure it is not the way that will provide the most uniq look and feel, but having a programmer not much interested in game design, designing a game won't lead to any good results either. 2003-06-25 13:27:36 12293
