12279 3815 news 506 Re: "*****craft-like?" ...be carefull!! If just Blizzard would have your wisdom back then it might have actually created something original instead of doing a cheap Dune2 ripoff...
Clones happen in the commercial world on a day to day basis, actually the commercial world works by creating clones or at least heavily inspried products. Somebody creates a product, somebody else creates a similar but better product, forcing the other company to fix there product and so on. In the end the consumer can choose the best from all of the available products and everybody is happy.
And before somebody starts to think that RoboVasion would actually be original, bad luck, the pseudo-iso-view is inspired by Starcraft, the vehicles look kind of like the onces in Decent, the buildings look pretty similar to the onces in Feuerkraft, which in itself looks similar to Firepower and GTA, the story might actually be slitly inspried by a Gargoyles episode and a bunch of StarTrek and the not-yet-released spaceships might be inspired by some foobar Sci-Fi series and thats only the stuff I could figure out myself, there might have been a lot of other sources and inspiration which I am not even aware of. The world is already old enough that nearly every 'new' idea was already invented in some form or the other, so completly new stuff is nearly impossible to come up with. Beside that the reason that the original Freecraft used to look like Warcraft2 was simply a way to speed up development, since you don't have to care about the graphics if there where already done by somebody else, but well I agree that starting FcMP as a replacment for the War2 graphics was a bad idea, something completly new would have been better, but nobody was willing to do it. Beside that my contributions to FcMP where actually inspired by Heros Quests, much more than by Warcraft2... 2003-06-25 06:56:01 12276

12281 3815 news -1 Re: 3815
Grumbel,

YOU DA MAN! :D

Keep at it. In the meantime I'll amuse myself with FreeCraft until you release a production version of RoboVasion or until Blizzard sends me and my pals a cease and desist letter heheheh.

Mind you, I use the original art from my Fr^H^HWarCraft CD and I installed it on 8 of my friends' hard drives, that ought to piss Blizzard off. :)
2003-06-25 07:31:25 12269
12282 Soccar games -1 WIN2k problems Anybody running this on WIN2k? Soccar is great at home (where I run slackware) but I'm saddled with win2k at work. I'm getting the following error: The procedure entry point ?op_new_vc@MemoryManager@Ogre@@AAEPAXII@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library OgreMain.dll ANd execution stops. Any ideas? 2003-06-25 07:57:25 0
12283 Soccar games 3 Looks very promising It still is in early development but it looks like playing it out against others will be good fun. Sound is sorely missed though.
"Try it alone first, and then later with friends over the internet or on LAN."
When I start hosting a game to play against bots, I find myself lonely on the playground, and the goal I scored didn't count ;)
I logged in to the default server, unfortunately I was alone again. Anyone up for a little match? 2003-06-25 08:11:38 0
12284 FreeCraft games 7620 Who's fault could it be?....Hmmm...
I've never played Freecraft, but I am familiar with their project. Whereas I agree with Blizzards' C&D letter, I find it petty. Sure Freecraft, I think, was in violation of a trademark. Maybe not just the name, but the name, in combination with using ripped graphics, numerous references and even screen shots! Hell, if I were Blizzard and saw my artwork ripped and placed in another engine, I'd be miffed too.

On the other hand, Freecraft was hardly a threat. They were cloning an outdated game which by all rights should have been donated to the gaming community (via the underdog site) a long time ago. For some reason, Blizzard is still trying to milk that old RTS. All it shows is just how greedy Blizzard can be. Here you have a giant crushing an ant. Whatever their reasons, it's just plain bad PR in my eyes. So congrats Blizzard. You can beat up a wimp. We're all very impressed.

As for the Freecraft project, I always thought it was a cheezy. A project to build a clone and use ripped graphics. Very sad...very very sad indeed! If that wasn't ripping enough, but to mimic the name as well... The final straw was to put up cream shots using ripped graphics. No wonder you got shut down. I'm surprized it took Blizzard so long. The Freecraft concept was flawed from the start. I won't be missing them as a project.

As was pointed out earlier, the Freecraft project was pretty much defunc already. Even with ripped graphics, trying to clone WarCraft was a pretty ambitious goal. Blizzard should have done enough research to notice that and just let Freecraft die a quiet death. Instead, Blizzard just had to show how petty they can be, and I for one will take that to heart. I was a faithful Blizzard follower....but now....I see them as mebers in the "axis of eval". Nothing but a petty and greedy software house that will probably continue to milk an old outdated title for decades to come. I do not plan to buy any more Blizzard wares in the future....that's not to say I won't be playing their games ;)
2003-06-25 08:33:44 0
12285 Soccar games 7778 Re: WIN2k problems I had a wrong dll in the initial upload. Try the most recent installer .exe instead. 2003-06-25 09:48:17 12282
12286 Soccar games 7778 Re: Looks very promising Well, to things: 1) there are no bots (yet?) 2) the default server is just a dummy address. Also, after a quick test I realized it isn't really playable on the Internet (yet) because of the high bandwith requirements (worked fine on lan though). I hope I can improve this and add sound too. Your score should be displayed on the scoreboards, if the aren't then it is a bug. Please file a bug report on SF.net if you can reproduce it. Thanks 2003-06-25 09:54:28 12283
12287 ThinkTanks games -1 This game ROCKS!!! This game totally rules! I just downloaded the demo last night and I already addicted! Thank you Bravetree!!! The only downside is that you get only three lives in solo, but hey, everything else compensates for that!!! ~HF243 2003-06-25 10:18:09 0
12288 Soccar games 3 Re: Looks very promising Thanks for the quick reply.
My bad, I just learned the score is displayed correctly. AFAIK, there's no way (yet?) to start a dedicated server. I would feek tempted to host at least occasional tournaments once you fixed the high bandwith requirements, this game really has a good fun potential.
Cheers 2003-06-25 10:34:18 12286
