12269 3815 news 506 Re: 3815 If you don't like the name RoboVasion, suggest a better one. If you don't like that Freecraft is down at the moment, go and setup your korean mirror and be happy. Freecraft went down cause the developers got bored of it and it kind of reached a dead end, the Blizzard letter didn't had all that much to do with it. After all FcMP never really took of and never reached a stage where it would be useable, single-player was never really useable in Freecraft and there was no one working on it to getting anything done beside the Warcraft2 clone. Thats why I started RoboVasion in Oct 2002, its completly independet of the whole Blizzard incedent.
Free Software doesn't mean that you can go around and get anything you want for free, it means that if something is bugging you you have to care yourself to get it fixed, be it by contributing something, by suggesting something or paying somebody else to getting it done. Useless trolling in the comments area gets you nowwhere.
Beside that if anybody is interested in my plans with FcMP and the rest of Freecraft, read the RoboVasion Faq. 2003-06-25 03:06:07 12248

12271 3815 news 506 Re: "*****craft-like?" ...be carefull!! They didn't gave up because they didn't have the guts, but simply they were not interested in working any longer on Freecraft. The former maintainer/developer of Freecraft already left the project six month ago. Thats the simple lesson to be learned from Free Software, if the maintainer lose interest or starts elsewhere the project dies, it already has happen with Tuxracer in a different form, Pingus had been very long more on the dead than on the living side and most promising projects out there are basically the work of a single man. 2003-06-25 03:14:30 12263

12274 3816 news 6885 Re: 3816 Well, those of us that have Wine and some gigs free could convert the movies ourselves. Not the perfect solution, but for those that can do it it beats buying the same game twice. But, that means no $ for TuxGames..
I'd buy an "upgrade cd" from TG (with installer, movies etc), if bioware would allow it. 2003-06-25 05:45:20 12259

12276 3815 news -1 Re: "*****craft-like?" ...be carefull!!
Just my 2 cents, but I have to completely agree with Blizzard in their gripes, just like I agreed with AT&T and now SCO with their UNIX gripes. Sure the gripes may seem trivial and in all cases stupid, but on the flip side, trying to popularize a project by leveraging off someone elses name is just plain cheap. Even if it's a freeware project, it's just plain cheap.

Second, the fact that Freecraft existed for the sole purpose (maybe not sole purpose) of ripping graphics from WarCraft was another cheap move. Granted, the decision was made to expediate production, but if I was Blizzard, I'd be put off by such tactics as well. From what I've heard, Freecraft is just an all around good engine and in most cases generic. I think instead of trying to mimic someone elses success, they should have marketed their freeware on their own merits. Maybe it's just me, but it's hard to take serious a project that rides on the shirt tails of someone else. Be original, and even if it's crap, at least you can earn the respect of being yourself and not some copy cat.

By the way, my reference to AT&T and SCO with UNIX is about using the "UNIX" name to popularize an OS. BSD was wrong back in the early 90's by trying to use the name BSD UNIX. I also feel the name GNU is pretty cheap name in that they dis the very name they try to mimic. Granted, there's no lawsuits against the GNU name, but if there was and I was the judge, I'd reward SCO/Novell for trademark infringement. Not that I have anything against the GNU utilities, it's just the improper name they choose. RMS should have had more insite instead of trying to be witty.
2003-06-25 06:11:10 12224
12277 3815 news -1 Re: 3815
What's wrong with the name Robovasion? Am I the only one who likes it? I think names like "Total Annihilation" are crap. Granted, TA was a great game....but what a stupid name. Only the acronym is cool as it makes me think of T&A and then I'm ok with it :)

In all seriousness, I think Grumble made all the right decisions. He was smart enough to leverage existing work, he saw the deficentcies of the numerous graphics for Freecraft, and he created his own unique world. I think the name fits well and it doesn't appear to mimic anything else on the market. I say great job!
2003-06-25 06:23:16 12269

I haven't played Robovasion yet, but it's nice to see your project progress nicely. My project is still on hold...time time time... ;)
2003-06-25 06:27:39 12277
