12209 FreeCraft games 6494 Rogue downloads Well, how about the old versions. I mean, they stopped development, but I'm pretty sure the last source tarball ist still somewhere to be found! Was it 1.18.0 or something? Well, I have it, and I'm pretty sure others have it too. I have 030311 and the corresponding FCMP. The game was pretty playable anyway. No, scratch that, the game was almost done, fit for network play and everything.

Those b*stards.

This is ridiculous. If they stopped development, does that mean that having the game or putting it on a web server is considered a crime? I would really like to upload it somewhere, but not if there is the slightest chance of going against _their_ law. Call me chicken, but as much as I do like the game, I have better things to do than take such stupid risks... 2003-06-23 09:05:55 0
12210 FreeCraft games 506 Re: Rogue downloads Changing the name would be a really good idea due to the trademark violation, but beside that I don't see anything especially criminal about uploading it somewhere, if unsure use something anonymous like Freenet or Gnunet. 2003-06-23 09:54:22 12209

12212 FreeCraft games 506 Blizzard not the guilty party... After all I have read, Blizzard doesn't seem to be guilty for Freecrafts shutdown, it seems to have been no more than the trigger which caused the demotivated developers to shutdown the project, nothing more. No negotiations between the Freecraft developers and Blizzard ever took place and a name change might have actually been enough to make Blizzard happy. See for example:
http://www.battle.net/forums/thread.aspx?FN=warroom&T=17874&P=1
or visit:
http://transitexec.sourceforge.net/
which seems to be the new game of the remaining developers. Anyway, people interested in continuing Freecraft under a different name, might join me at:
http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/robovasion/webpage/welcome.html
To thus that hope that ProjectInferno will rescue Freecraft I can say that Diablo-D3 is basically planing to rewrite huge parts of Freecraft and doesn't have any plans to keep it as it is. So even if he gets something done, it might take month or years before anything playable is available, which after all means that Freecraft in its current form will not be continued by ProjectInferno, it will really just recycle some parts, while throwing away others. 2003-06-23 15:03:46 0
12213 BoyCott Advance/SDL games -1 some finetuning needed? sorry, but the sounds of metroid fusion are corrupted (ver 0.22b). VirtualBoyAdvance plays the same rom just fine - with perfect sound. maybe, some "finetuning" is needed on BoyCott Advande? Untill now, VirtualBoyAdvance is the best free Advanceboy- Emulation, IMHO. 2003-06-23 15:36:53 0
12214 Battle for Wesnoth games 4512 A very good point. My game's called Porrog, since you asked. I've released a couple of versions, but only for the attention of my friends so far. Planning to announce it in the development forums in a day or 2 -not on the main game listing, as it's not really ready for playing yet (no objective or anything!).
But yeah, in developing it I had my first experiments with gprof, which I now kind of worship... it tells you what you really need to know!!! I'd wanted to make my gnarly map generator faster, and had assumed most of the time would be spent in one of the lower level functions, but it turned out practically ALL the time was spent in the first, high level functions that I'd expected to be quite simple. Optimizing them made the map generator about 4 times faster or something. :-O
So I really must agree with your comments on premature optimisation. As you can't tell where the time will go till it's written and you profile it, your time can be better spent (and optimized code might be more likely to have bugs in it). OTOH, the overall structure of a program can sometimes make a difference to efficiency, and that mostly needs to be done at the start (or when refactoring). 2003-06-23 16:30:28 12197
12215 FreeCraft games -1 Re: You people are hilarious. GOD THOSE BASTARDS AT BLIZZARD!!! I'm Sure Freecraft had them on the brink of finnancial ruin. I'm sure millions of customers were just pirating away. I'm sure this hobby project was SO important, that they had to call emergancy Board meetings to handle the matter! But ok Blizzard I see how it's is. Im placing copies of StarCraft into my Kazza Shared folder as we speak. Jackasses. 2003-06-23 16:38:24 12181
