Simutrans | games | -1 | why exactly... | ...can't this one be really free? (not just beer-free) GPL, BSD, *anything* listed as a free software license at gnu.org. Anything but closed source. See, they're making use of the community, even have a development team spread around the web. People are making translations and whatnot. So it's by all means a community effort. Why can't the code be free as well? Aren't the people being ripped off when the fruits of their labor aren't freely available? just how is this licensed right now exactly anyway? Just wondering. There are some of these games (well, Parsec was one of them) and I can't in my mind find any reason for their choice of a proprietary license. It should be a no-brainer if you're truly not planning to ever make any money out of it... (and even then... but that would be just for those who really believe in free/libre/open source software) | 2003-06-22 17:12:38 | 0
FreeCraft | games | -1 | Some more radical boycott letter | Hello, I live in Poland. I'm outraged with the Blizzard's behavior. It reminds me the communist times in my country. Therefore, I'm urging all of you to BOYCOTT this company; to BOYCOTT its 'parent', Vivendi, too. To spread the idea of BOYCOTT on the net. It works, because companies fear the loss of consumers. And WE may cause this loss, completely with legitimate ways of calling others NOT to buy their products. Here is my letter: it's short and clear. ----------------------------- Hello, I have been your regular customer, but after you have assailed the FreeCraft Project, I, as an Open Source sympathiser, have started to BOYCOTT YOU, by the following means: - I' ve destroyed all your products I legally owned (by deleting them and destroying the media ie. CDs and paper books physically) - I declared myself to ABSTAIN FROM PURCHASING ANY of your products or using any of your services - I declared myself to CALL OTHERS TO DO WHAT I DO - to COMPLETELY BOYCOTT YOUR COMPANY AND ITS "PARENT", VIVENDI. You have waged a war against Open Source, so now you have it. Without Regards, [your name] [your e-mail] --------- How do you like it? Btw I don't know WHY FreeCraft's crew has so quickly listened to the threats of Blizzard/Vivendi. They could simply move to the new address, located in another country. After all, there was NO trial at all; would we allow 'them' to shut down our projects, based on 'cease-and-desist' banditism only? Where will it stop? Would we see 'them' shutting down KDE, OpenOffice, or even whole Linux? Would we obey just because they send their EMPTY THREATS to some of us? Or will we start to fight back? Why not teach them a lesson by spreading a source code on other sites (that would tell them it's futile to chase programmers, for once something has been distributed, it may be NEVER stopped). After all, even FreeCraft's authors CAN NOT tell others to stop its distribution now, as the project has been GPLed ... Ah, btw, I think we should send the support letters to FC crew. Does anyone have their addresses? Yours, Critto, http://www.libertaryzm.prv.pl critto@wp.pl | 2003-06-22 17:29:35 | 12144

I've been working on my game quite solidly for something like the past 3 months, and it's not nearly as complete as yours. You should be very pleased with yourself. <BR>OTOH my game is much faster ;) | 2003-06-22 17:41:18 | 12185 |

FreeCraft | games | 492 | Re: so quit whining.... | <p>Ya know, on Nov 30, 1999 when the name freecraft was first proposed, I don't think any of us thought that about how limiting the name actually was. Freecraft was <em>not</em> just a way to play warcraft in linux (and osx ...). Out of the megabytes produced, less then 100K of it was warcraft specific. Want a game with 4 races instead of 2, have fun, the engine will not stop you. Want 6 resources or 1 instead of Warcraft II's 3? Go for it. Want to make fishing ships that go and pick up fish that can be used to make new units like in AOE? Be my guest. Freecraft is far more than just a Warcraft II clone, but the name and the fact that the default configuration files made it look like that limited the game to being a warcraft II clone, not in the code, but in the minds of people who saw it. </p> <p>Here's to Project Inferno, may it not repeat the mistakes of Freecraft.</p> | 2003-06-22 19:31:40 | 12183
FreeCraft | games | -1 | Re: Dear Blizzard... | I just realized that this whole thing is much more ridiculous than I thought. This whole thing is *only* about the name! I guess I'll have to rewrite my e-mail to Blizzard... | 2003-06-22 19:52:48 | 12168
Dopewars | games | -1 | It's too easy in 1P mode | I is good at first, but after three games, you can turn on the autopilot. Network mode is much better than the single player game. l10n. Local slang may improve a lot the game. | 2003-06-22 20:35:52 | 0

FreeCraft | games | -1 | Re: Dear Blizzard... | The idea of your email was good. The text was bad. How is Blizzard supposed to take something seriously when it seems as if it was written by a 7th grader. Pass it through word at the very least and spell check it. If you want to take it a step further take out the empty cuss words. Make it professional and then it may hold more backing. | 2003-06-22 22:13:28 | 12168
