| 12157 | FreeCraft | games | -1 | Re: Various | 1st, logic isn't always the rule of thumb when it comes to trademark/copyright law. They can copyright *craft as a title / idea when it applies to their game / style of gameplay. A game called BolognaCraft could be affected if gameplay was too similar, but doubtful on a game called the Craft of Bologna (if gameplay wasn't an issue). It does suck when a Mega-corp squashes the little guy (who probably couldn't afford to defend his/herself even if they did have a case). But that's how copyright/trademark law works. The word "craft" of itself probably couldn't be copyrighted/trademarked because of it's commonality, but it's use in conjuction with another / other words could be... | 2003-06-22 06:40:38 | 12155 |
| 12158 | FreeCraft | games | -1 | You people are hilarious. | I have to laugh. Not to be offensive, but just because it's so amusing.

You want to know WHY FreeCraft got shut down? Here's the EXACT reason (I'm not an inside source, but I'll guarantee this is why): piracy. What is it that FreeCraft allowed you to do? Why, it let you play WC2 on non-Windows OSes. How? By COPYING ALL THE DATA FROM THE WARCRAFT II CD! Can we say CD-Key circumvention? Yep, that's right folks. The real reason behind the shutdown of FreeCraft was because they included, by accident, the ability to use a pirated copy of Warcraft II. Tsk, tsk, shame on them. :P

If they wanted to keep the project, all they would have had to have done was remove the ability to copy the graphics, sounds, etc. (basically, all the Warcraft II data). This, of course, would probably defeat one of the main purposes of the project, but that's life. The ONLY way you could have done this is by contacting Blizzard / Vivendi and working out with them on how to keep the CD-Key implementation, but that's AFTER you get the "OK" to use their client software in the first place. It's the same reason that BNetD got shut down, and it's the ONLY part of that rotten case that holds water (personally, I side with BNetD, but that's me ;)).

Continuing the project under another name, with new people isn't going to do an ounce of good. Sooner or later, YOU'LL get shut down, too. What you all fail to realize is Blizzard / Vivendi (much more the latter, here) have VERY tight holds on their property. I've seen countless mods for countless games get shutdown by Blizzard / Vivendi, and all for the same reasons: copyright infringement. And they have a legal right to do it, too, because they DO own the copyright to all those bits and bytes. You copy / emulate Blizzard's work, and they WILL shut you down, LEGALLY. Sorry, but that's the way the world works.

To put it bluntly: there is no way for you to legally port the game. Period. At least, not that I can see. But, I'm not a programmer, so I wouldn't know how to code it so that you could prevent piracy, etc. (i.e. require the CD-Key; and Blizzard refuses to divulge that information to anyone, so it's a moot point anyway). You all can think and do whatever you like, but bashing Blizzard and complaining about FreeCraft getting shut down don't mean jack. They got shut down for good reason, whether ANY of us (myself included) agree or not. I, just as much as all of you, would love to have the ability to play Warcraft II (among other games) on a Linux platform WITHOUT the need for a Windows emulator, but the fact is it's illegal unless the owner of the game gives you the "OK". That's a fact of life and law, and one we must live with, whether we agree with it or not. And, frankly, I agree with it, even if I want to see the Linux community thrive beyond measure.

Not to burst your bubble folks, and not to rag on you, but I had to comment. Sorry to anyone if I offended. Take care and be well, and may the community continue to thrive, regardless of setbacks. | 2003-06-22 06:41:54 | 0 |
| 12159 | FreeCraft | games | -1 | Re: Dune?? | yes, i've played it, it was Dune II from Westwood Studio's, 1993, this game was VERY similar to Warcraft and of course came before. But i know it was not the first game of this type, so you see, it's a long story, but it's not blizzard's one. | 2003-06-22 06:47:18 | 12150 |

| 12166 | FreeCraft | games | -1 | Re: You people are hilarious. | Obviously the original poster has absolutely no idea of the concept of unlawful copying...

1) If they wrote the code themselves then they didn't copy blizzards. It doesn't matter if it does exactly the same thing - it isn't copied.

2) An individual using the artwork from the CD isn't illegal either, providing that you buy a copy of Warcraft 2.

3) Your "CD key" argument. That can only cover the binaries, and that's all it's intended to protect. A CD key prevents you from running the program without a CD key, that's it. ANYBODY can just read the resources off the disk. So, no you aren't circumventing the CD key | 2003-06-22 08:22:33 | 12158 |
