Re: DON'T DO THEIR WORK!!! |
Lets address the points one after the other shall we.

The whole "project" is quite a rip-off - starting with looking for people to create a game without paying a salary or anything,

We are aiming to help people create their own company, not to be a part of ours. The people we have assembled will be the owners of the company. A contract for this has been presented to the group. As owners of the company they can decide what to do with the money, to keep it all themselves, to fund the company for future titles, their choice.

and without a guarantee that their (hard) work will be appreciated in any way.

Their work will be appreciated by all who see it. These people are starting their own business there is never a guarentee. However let us get an idea of what they HAVE been promised. LGP is planning on publishing the game, we have promised that if we do then they will get a split of the funds far above the usual level of royalty than publishers usually offer. If we dont publish, the game is theirs to take elsewhere. LGP will be taking the game to other publishers for other platforms and using OUR hard earned contacts to push the game into the mass market.

None of the people currently involved with Angry Pixels seem to have any fundamental biz background, they're just plain programmers and/or artists.

You are correct, they are the DEVELOPERS, not the PUBLISHERS, the publishers handle the business end, the developers and artists make the game. If they need lots of business people, then the publishers are doing something wrong.

And now they ask people who are not involved in the whole - COMMERCIAL - "project" (the final game is to be sold!!!) to do THEIR WORK - coming up with an appropriate logo can take up quite a lot of time and money - as someone in the previous discussions already noted - why don't they hire a professional company if they can't come up with a logo by themselves?

Actually this is because of the whole concept of 'community involvement'. In fact a NUMBER of the logos presented on the logos page were made by Angrp Pixels team members. We didnt NEED to ask the community. We CHOSE to do so because this company will, all going well, be the flagship game development company for Linux, and will be answerable to the COMMUNITY.

The reason is that it requires market research, understanding the market sector(s) and other non-technical biz stuff - and therefore the answer is, as I already said in the beginning, that they want to exploit people's naiveness.

Unfortunately you have killed yourown arguement there. Holding a competition is NOT valid market research, if you had ANY idea of market research you would know this. The samples we get are way too small and all biased in terms of 'all applicants are people that can draw'. If people are being naieve by being part of the community, theyn hell, I guess that we should all pack up and go home, cos Linux is ALL about community.

The reason why I "dare" to come to such a conclusion and why I ask you all not to vote? Because: 1. I got a reply from them, when the whole thing was set up and I applied for getting involved in it, where they said more or less that everything I supplied is really top notch, but blah blah blah (finding an excuse to exclude me) - the reason for this (THAT I KNOW) is because they certainly have realized that I would not agree to their rip-off strategies (which became more and more clear only by time).

Ahhhhhh right so you are someone that didnt make the grade, so you are disgruntled by being rejected. Now this becomes clear. You arent actually an impartial observer, you are someone out for revenge because your entry was not good enough. To state a fact, all applications were accepted or rejected based on QUALITY of applications. How on earth do you think we would be able to think 'this person will not go along with our draconian policies, so we must reject them' - are we all telepathic? No, more likely than telepathic is that you didnt make the grade and are now hitting out to try and salve your wounded ego.

2. I am running my own biz and had to go through all this (creating logos, choosing the "right" one) myself, and I have lots of contact to other start-ups who told me the same - it's neither an easy task, nor cheap nor a time efficient process to create a corporate ID (and a logo is just one of it, website and other stuff are others - just in case you don't know - as someone hinted in one of the other replies - just waiting until they ask people to create their website...)

Our website is being created in-house actually by the team we have already. I have to ask, if you are starting yourown company, how many thousands did you pay to a corporate branding company in order to have them send you your company name in arial 12 point with a yellow slash through it? Most companies make theirown logo to start with, unless of course your entire knowledge of busienss is the dot com era where companies have tens of thousands (or millions) to throw down the toilet. Angry Pixels is a small group and will not be flushing away its money.

They certainly are pros - they know which people they want in their projects,

Well of course we know who we want in our projects, we know we want the best. And you know, we have them. And why, because THEY understand what we are doing. THEY know that Angry Pixels isnt an 'LGP money making venture' it is a way to try and build the Linux gaming market. Please, come back to planet reality, NOBODY right now is in the Linux gaming market for the money. I have personally sunk every penny I have saved into the gaming companies I have founded and I dont expect to even be repaid for several years. Linux gaming is NOT somewhere a conman could earn big money. I think EVERYONE knows that, and it is another nail in your arguements coffin.

and which ones to exclude

Well, lets see, we excluded a number of people who were VERY good, but we either had better people in the area they were good in, or we had people who we felt were more multi-purpose and not too specialist in one area. Some people we rejected because their application plain out and out stank, and some people didnt follow the simple instructions for the application. Would we have been better to accept everyone, regardless of ability, useful team size? If I went for a job at your company, would you gove me a job regardless of whether other applicants are better, or myown ability? No, of course you wouldnt. We chose the best based on ability, as everyone should.

- they know how to "pull the right strings" to have their "puppets behave"

That is pretty funny. So far the team has made every major decision, LGP has been shouted down on several occasions. The team is in control of the companies destiny in all aspects.

(if any of those "hired" by LGP read this and think I'm talking crap, then try to ask some serious qusetions about copyright and stuff - thought you might run a high risk to get kicked out of the "company"!

Interestingly enough it is our stated policy, in writing, that Angry Pixels owns all copyright on any production of the team, and Angry Pixels is 10% owned by LGP, 90% owned by the team members. Any member of our team knows this. It was discussed in depth at our first meeting many weeks ago.

And don't ask LGP about this - they will surely tell you that this is all wrong!

Interesting, do you think that the Angry Pixels team are too dumb to look at the facts for themselves? These people in our team are extremely bright, they arent going to let something like that go past them.

Alternatively you can also just go on as like normal and see for yourself how this "story" ends...).

Indeed. Nobody knows how the story will end. I have been 100% upfront with the team. They know the company may fail, the project may fail, and if it does they will end up with nothing. But then, so will LGP.

Thanks for reading, MaxPayne at nyc.com (flame- and nonsense-mail send to dev.null @ localhost) p.s. you might be asking yourself why do I bother writing this - reason is that it disgusts me that there exist people who go by this kind of mentality (meaning making use of other people's naiveness)...

Are Linux kernel developers naieve? They put in lots of work and get NOTHING back. Does EVERYTHING you do have to be guarenteed of success, do you refuse to do stuff and take a risk? Are you TOO SCARED to take that chance? The people in this team are taking a chance. Maybe they will come out of it with nothing but memories, maybe they will come out of it millionaires. I dont know, nor do you. However I do knoiw one thing.
No member of our team has had a 2 page rant whilst hiding behind an anonymous login on happy penguin. THe email address you mention is not one that made a submission to enter our group. So, why dont you tell us all who you are and I can post why you were rejected, and the reasons for it. Or are you just desperate for a dig to get revenge because you didnt make the grade, you werent good enough to be in the group so you feel the need to try and pull down those better than yourself.

Ball is in your court. Alternatively, drop it and walk away before you make yourself look even stupider than you already have done. |
