Project: Starfighter | games | 7754 | Not bad... | I like slightly more realistic space games. Friction in space and parallax scrolling stars are just silly. I think this game probably needs the friction for playability reasons, but I find the stars are annoying. And the WEAPCO Frigate was way too difficult for me -- that's where I gave up. But I'm notoriously bad at video games. Oh, one other thing that would be really nice would be a key to bypass the cutscenes, like the death animation and the end-of-level thing (I _hate_ waiting for useless animations). Something nice and intuitive, like Escape. :-) Leaving the above personal objections aside, it's a fairly well-executed game. Well worth a try. | 2003-05-19 16:54:16 | 0
Project: Starfighter | games | -1 | Re: Nice game... a bit slow, though. | Celerons are only useful for using as dog poo covers. When you find some stinking dog poo in the yard and don't want to scoop it, cover it up with a celeron so you won't accidentally step in it. | 2003-05-19 17:52:19 | 7487
Project: Starfighter | games | 7914 | some things that should be addressed.... | Here are some things that need to be changed for the good of all... <br><br> First of all, whoever posted this game into happypenguin only wrote SDL as the requirement when this game clearly states that it needs sdl_mixer, sdl_image and libsdl. <br><br> Secondly, having a download link like...<br> http://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/download.php?file=starfighter.tar.gz&type=zip&ref=3f2bedc0b4fe8e60b9e6157ca1a11eb6 <br>does not help those who run on a ports based system, it is also very impractical to leave out the version in the filename too! <br><br> Whoever this may concern, please fix these issues. | 2003-05-19 22:22:24 | 0

Project: Starfighter | games | 506 | Well done! | Pretty well done this game, I like the story and the whole surrounding, weapon-buy menus, etc. Nice music too. Grafik are also pretty good, even so they look a bit small on a 640x480 screen. Bad things in this game? Well, it is pretty difficult to actually shoot enemies with the simple laser weapon, doging their shots while still aiming at them is far to hard, having a way to 'lock-on' an enemy might help here. The background and the stars are also a bit to bright, making it hard to see the enemies in all those moving stars, making them a bit darker should do the trick. A tutorial level as the first level might also be a good idea, since the gameplay might not be what you expect, its not a horizontal-scroller, but more a free-flight game. <br><br> The binary that comes with the tarball has a hardcoded /usr/share/ path in it and the 'make install' installs directly into /usr/ which I consider very evil and unnecesarry, patching the binary with ghex to point to '.' made the game run without messing around with /usr/ or installing it, compiling from source should also help. <br><br> Another thing that bothers me is that I couldn't find a license text and the manual states: <br><br> "Warning: This is free software. It may not be sold or otherwise purchased without the express permission of Parallel " <br><br> Which doesn't really fit the requirements for free software. | 2003-05-20 00:40:13 | 0
Project: Starfighter | games | -1 | Re: Well done! | When the author calls the game "free software," I think he means free as in, it costs nothing and he can still apply whatever restrictions he wishes, not free as in Linux where it has to follow a certain code or guideline. I think you are misinterpreting what he means by free. | 2003-05-20 00:50:06 | 11460
TuxTyping | games | -1 | Source | Where do I get the source-code for 1.5? I can only find source for 1.0.3.... | 2003-05-20 01:37:53 | 0
KartingRace | games | -1 | Re: Only software render :( | Maybe they compiled against Mesa libraries, rather than linking to generic opengl libraries that are replaced by NVidia/ATI's. | 2003-05-20 01:38:47 | 8371
Project: Starfighter | games | 506 | Re: Well done! | <p>When people want to refer to freeware, most often they simply say freeware, the term free software is pretty uncommon, unless one is taking about free software. Anyway, here the full paragraph:</P> <blockquote>"Warning: This is free software. It may not be sold or otherwise purchased without the express permission of Parallel Realities. If you wish to include this software as part of a commercial package you must seek the permission of Parallel Realities. Many of the components used within this game are available within the public domain and are placed there at the owner's wishes that they are"</blockquote> <p>Beside that there are no copyright infos in the source, which still leaves me puzzled on what exactly I got here. The Webpage also states that:</p> <blockquote>"Parallel Realites' software is Free. Distribution of this software is restricted to the software being provided in the state it is found on these webpages (and in certain cases, Aminet). Software may not be provided as part of commericial packages without the permission of Parallel Realities. Magazines and official Aminet CDs are excluded from this clause. If you are providing any Parallel Realities' software as part of a freeware package please contact us with details."</blockquote> <p>It really looks non-free after all, anway contacting the author might be a good idea, since the 'public domain' part leaves me a bit puzzled.</p> | 2003-05-20 01:54:58 | 11461
