| 11422 | 3706 | news | -1 | Re: Leak? | But this is because license of those drivers -- knoppix is not allowed to distribute nvidia proprietary drivers. But you can install knoppix to harddisk in 20 minutes and install proprietary nvidia drivers in next 10 minutes. Still better than this live gentoo. Knoppix is distro suitable for dummies.
Write nvidia about 'how much it sucks to not be able to redistribute their drivers'. NVidia should open drivers.
I wasnt even able to see X with gentoo -- this is not suitable for FPS. 3D FPS in asci mode may be interesting, but not playable. | 2003-05-18 12:54:40 | 11420 |
| 11423 | 3699 | news | -1 | It's called '3D graphics' | Model your characters, animate them, and you can render your sprites at any resolution, with motion blur etc. etc.
If your sprites are small you don't need high res meshes and textures, and if your sprites are large you will probably save time doing it in 3D anyway, especially if your desgn is not set in stone. Decide you want to change the way a character walks, and most likely you will have to redraw every frame of animation if you are doing it the 'manual 2D' way. With 3D, you just modify your keys, with intant feedback as to how the final sequence will look, and hit the render button.
I use a setup with 8 cameras and a simple animated figure. I can animate a cycle in 3D, then render the view from the 8 different cameras to give me all the frames I require for my sprite. I then use command-line tools (ImageMagick) to crop and combine the frames into a single image for convenience in my game.
All the 3D work is done in Blender, which is free and Open Source, so there is no cost to doing it this way.
Once the initial setup is done, this makes life rather easy. All I have to worry about is animating the skeleton, I can forget about messing round at the pixel level or redrawing motion sequences entirely, ever. Multiple characters can often be realised simply by changing the textures applied to the 3D model. Any tweaking required at pixel level can be done in the GIMP, though it is generally easier to fix it in Blender.
You will also find that producing isometric tiles etc. can also be aided by the use of a 3D modelling app, as it is often difficult for 2D artists to work with this projection - with a 3D app, just get them to draw a 'top down' projection of the texture, map it onto a polygon and render with the appropriate camera.
Nobody bothers to write palette-based pixel-pushing paint programs any more because they are completely redundant.
If you can write a game engine you can figure out enough about GIMP's scripting tools to do anything you mentioned, possibly with the exception of a better grid. Rotating individual layers - for moving limbs etc. and doing the blur stuff should be easy, but frankly it is much simpler to do it in a 3D app. | 2003-05-18 13:10:29 | 11310 |

I HOPE not | I am attempting to make a mmorpg, or an rpg that someone else can go the mmorpg route with, that will run under my own liscense. I call it the DWTFYWT liscense....Do What The F you Want To liscense. I am tired of there not being anything for those of us who are not rich , so I am learning c++ inside and out, and will be using crystal space, blender , and either borland, python. or dev c++ to make this game. Have fun ya'll, and I'll have more on my project soon. | 2003-05-18 13:37:56 | 9601 |
| 11425 | Zinc | games | -1 | Re: mmm | And who said it had to be a Linux game, courageously-anonymous troll? It's written in Java, you can probably run it on anything that has a JRE. In fact there's plenty of games here that run in Windows too, so I don't see what point you're trying to make. Maybe you're just a shit-disturber that's been out of school and off the ritalin long enough that you need to start an argument? | 2003-05-18 13:56:10 | 10301 |

It successfully detected ALL of my hardware, and I was playing the game in no time.

Why in the hell are you telling people to use Knoppix?
