| 11404 | xboard / gnuchess | games | 4553 | They ought to seperate these | Sure, gnuchess comes bundled with Xboard- but they're two very different and independent pieces of software, and the 5.x versions of Gnuchess are released by people who have little or nothing to do with Tim Mann (xboard and gnuchess 4.x developer). The linked "official GNU Chess page" is anything but, and people using the download link for "xboard/gnuchess" in an attempt to find GNU chess 5.06 will be disappointed. These pieces of software ought to have seperate pages in the happypenguin database. | 2003-05-17 07:17:03 | 0 |
| 11405 | 3706 | news | 7984 | RE: teams, blood, and stuff. | Yea, basically each map has two teams, who see themselves and teammates as members of the US Army, and the other team as "opposing forces." The mission objectives will be like "Defend this oil pipeline [it is not in Iraq, though :)] from the enemy" and the other will be "Take this oil pipeline from the opposing forces." It's confusing at first, especially if you're used to CS (which is only similar to AA in that they are both military vs 'terrorists'), but I guess it's better for the army to do this than catch a lot of flak for training people how to be terrorists... "oh, I'm told you can only be wounded and not killed: theres no blood either....." This is not true. Some of the missions are training missions, which use laser tag, so if you are 'killed' you start beeping and your character sits down on the ground and takes off his helmet. For the training missions, both teams are viewed as part of the US army, but the two teams look slightly different. As for blood, there used to be no blood, but they have put it in since then (along with a menu for turning it off). Anyway, I don't have any problems with America's Army, and as I remember it, icculus was the one doing the AA port. What I have to complain about is that I have to download another gameCD to play AA, and I already got the ut2003 demo gameCD (unfortunately I can't get it to work as X doesn't work right off of the CD, at least on my computer. Then again, I am already using Gentoo and have purchased the full version of UT2003, so really it's just for playing on other computers) ... I hope they put it up as a separate download once everyone has downloaded/installed gentoo! :-P | 2003-05-17 08:09:59 | 11389 |
