<a href="http://www.avsim.com">AVSIM Online</a> has put up <a href="http://www.avsim.com/pages/0299/flight_gear/flight_gear_interview.htm">an interview</a> with <a href="/show?Flight%20Gear%20Flight%20Sim">Flight Gear Flight Sim</a> creator and project lead Curtis Olson. There's some interesting stuff in there about FGFS's advanced scenery system, and some good press for Open Source software. It's a good read, check it out. |

<a href="http://www.shugashack.com/">sCary</a> has posted some super hi-res new Quake 3 screenshots that got me all warm inside, so I thought I'd share. This are the best quality shots I've seen yet. Mmmmmmmm. Now if only I could speed up time so Q3 were already released...
<p>
At least we're only about a month away from q3test. |

Wow. Until I watched this demo, I hadn't realized how much I missed the DOS productions of the Future Crew, Triton and others a few years back. If you don't know what I'm talking about, a "demo" in this sense is a demonstration of someone or some group's awesome graphics coding power, usually accompanied by music. State of Mind is a brilliant example of this. It's a very fast-paced, hip montage of 3D graphics, old film footage and really nice film-ish effects. No description will do this demo justice, though. Take the time to download it and you'll understand what I'm talking about. There's a very high coolness factor here. State of Mind won 2nd place at The Party '98 demo competition in Denmark.
<p>
This won't be news to some, but there's a good number of impressive demos for Linux out there if you know where to look. Check out <a href="http://www.hytti.uku.fi/~vheikkil/ocsa/unixdemos.html">Viznut's List of Unix Demos</a>, and <a href="http://www.webring.org/cgi-bin/webring?ring=linuxscene&list">The Linux Scene Webring</a> for good starting points. And I'd be just tickled if someone took the time to <a href="http://www.happypenguin.org/add">add Game Tome entries</a> for the demos they view, so others can easily find them too.

Nice Linux demo by skal Winner of Wired 1996. Nice fx, music could use a little work though. |

There are some new <a href="http://www.singularity-software.com/shots.html">screenshots</a> online at Singularity Software's site. They show off some cool new volumetric fog and volumetric, reflective water effects that have been added to the engine. Very nice. |

<em>Category:</em> Code Library<br>
Ocsalib provides a simple 2D wrapper to X11, svgalib, and GGI (buggy). It also provides a sound tracker. You can write demos with it. It also includes several examples. The demos in the package aren't as neat as what you could do with the library, this would be a good library for first time demo-coders to use. |

<em>Description:</em> A Linux port of Boom, which is an enhanced version of Doom from id's source.<p>
<a href="mailto:cph@lxdoom.linuxgames.com">Colin Phipps</a> has released what may be the final release of lxDoom. He says:<blockquote>...I've decided that as a project LxDoom has reached where I intended it to reach. It is a stable, fully featured single player/coop port capable of playing nearly all current Doom levels.<br>
...So I've decided I won;t be working much on adding features to LxDoom anymore. I'll still be fixing any bugs, including
patches and suggestions I get from people from time to time; but I'm not planning any serious new stuff myself.
</blockquote>
<p>
Changes from version 1.3.3 include enhanced skies support, status bar scaling for hi-res, new commandline parsing logic, performance enhancements and bug fixes. |

<a href="mailto:ncadilha@worldnet.net">Nicolas Cadilhac</a> wrote in to announce an interesting new project that aims to be a virtual air trafiic control for flight sims that support it:
<blockquote>
Aircom is a new opensource project. It is an aeronautical network of services whose purpose is to link virtual pilots using flight simulators with virtual air traffic controllers. It will also provide meteo services, a flight data
processing system, a common clock and a lot more. All Air Traffic Control programs are based on Eurocontrol specifications.
<p>
The goal is to develop all these pieces of software so that they are portable between Windows and any Unix-like OS. For the controller workstation, developed today under Windows with VC++ (shame on me), it seems difficult at this time because it is highly interactive, but if someone wants to offer his skills to do the same things under linux, it would be wonderful !! (use of canvas under gnome ?). All code dealing with the servers or that need just a few HMI have to run mainly under
unix. By writing to you here, I hope to attract a lot of passionate developers
wanting to be involved in an ambitious project where everybody can find something he likes and something to learn.
</blockquote>
